Since its creation in 2005, YouTube has grown in popularity and has now become the second-largest search engine after Google. In 2019, a new app called TikTok swept across the world and gained millions of users within months. It now has over a billion users worldwide! This has created competition for YouTube, which had dominated the video content space for years. 

Over the past year, we’ve seen a number of content creators switch over from YouTube to TikTok to post their videos. In particular, many vloggers, including creators like Holly Vlogs (@hollyvlogsofficial) have made the switch and have already seen amazing success. 

But what are the differences between posting vlogs on YouTube and TikTok? Which one is better for you? This is something that each and everyone can help you with.

The Length of Video 

YouTube is one of the best platforms to post long-form content and show your authentic self. Longer videos give you more time to share your life through vlogging. Many YouTube vloggers choose to film over a few days and combine their content into one video each week. 

We have also seen an incredible number of creators amass a huge amount of TikTok followers through their daily vlogs. Many people don’t have time to sit and watch a long video, so the maximum time of 60 seconds on TikTok videos is ideal for them. 

The Viewers 

YouTube users cover all age groups, which enhances your chances of building a loyal audience. YouTube is also better for audiences to interact with their favourite vloggers through commenting on their videos. Users can also easily search for the specific types of videos they want to watch, which encourages active viewing. 

It’s mainly the younger generation that enjoys watching vlog-style content. For this reason, TikTok can be a great platform to post vlogging content on. Its users are primarily between 16-24, the age group who consume vlog content the most. 

Organic Reach 

Although 95% of internet users watch YouTube, the organic reach is not the best. There are so many content creators on the platform, and millions of videos are posted on there every day. This leaves YouTube saturated, and vloggers can struggle to get their videos seen. 

Many YouTubers spend hours consistently filming and editing their videos each week before seeing significant growth. Although some videos can go viral, this is less likely on YouTube than it is on TikTok. 

This does mean, however, that YouTube vloggers tend to have a more loyal audience who have been watching them for months or even years. A great example of this is Zoella, who has been on the platform for several years and now has a huge fanbase. 

On the other hand, creators like Victoria Paris (@victoriaparisf) have seen rapid growth through TikTok’s high level of organic reach. Victoria is a TikTok user based in New York City that now has a million followers after posting regular short-form videos on the platform.
